Local Love: Small Potatoes

Photos courtesy of Connecticut Food and Farm

Small Potatoes opened July 2013. I decided that I wanted to take a chance and work for myself after working 20 years for others!

We sell locally handmade items. These days I find that unique gifts are what people are looking for - it doesn't matter if it's only $5.00. I try to keep the items in my shop at a reasonable price. I select items by searching out people on Etsy and at local craft and artisan events. Many times, makers come to me!

Figuring out what marketing to do has been the biggest learning curve for my business. I'm learning that a mix of radio and newsprint is best.

As a business owner, be real and be honest. Take an honest interest in the customers that come in the shop and what they're looking for. I try to be as helpful as I can, even if they don't find what they're looking for. They'll be back!!
